How do I care for my PEGAI leather goods?
Luxurious Leather and Its Natural Beauty
Genuine, high-quality leather proudly displays its natural grain, including vein marks, minor scratches, and color variations. These characteristics are not flaws but rather the hallmarks of true artisan-grade leather.
We recommend minimal care for our leather products, as they are already treated with oils and waxes to make them low-maintenance. Our leather is not considered waterproof, though it does have some water-repellent properties. It can handle a drizzle or light rain, but it should not be submerged or soaked intentionally.
Generally, we advise against applying additional conditioning or treatments unless you have a specific need. If you choose to use a conditioner or treatment, please test it on a small, discrete area of your product first to ensure it doesn’t alter the appearance or texture before applying it to the entire item.
Caring for Your Leather Craft
- Cleaning: Gently remove loose dirt or dust with a soft brush or dry cloth. For minor stains, use a damp cloth with mild soap or a leather cleaner designed for your leather type. Apply the cleaner to the cloth, not directly to the leather, and gently rub the stained area. Allow it to dry naturally. Avoid using bleach, ammonia, acetone, or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the leather. Do not soak the leather in water, as it may become stiff and brittle.
- Protecting Leather from Damage: Keep leather away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying and cracking. Avoid exposing leather to extreme temperature changes, and try to keep it dry. If it gets wet, wipe off excess water and let it dry as quickly as possible. Protect your leather from sharp objects and abrasive surfaces to prevent scratches or punctures.
- Maintaining Leather's Appearance: We generally do not recommend using conditioners or third-party treatments, as they may adversely affect the leather. If using a waterproofing agent, test it on a small, inconspicuous area first and follow the product's instructions. While most leathers don't require conditioning, you may apply it cautiously if desired. Avoid applying any product to suede, nubuck, or distressed leathers like Crazy Horse, as this can damage their texture.
- Proper Leather Storage: Store leather in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity. Use a breathable cover, like a cotton or muslin bag, to protect it from dust. Never store leather in plastic or vinyl bags, as these can trap moisture and lead to mold and damage. Keep leather away from direct contact with other materials, such as metal or wood, to prevent discoloration or damage. Additionally, store light or bright-colored leathers separately to avoid color transfer.
